3 1/4 x 5 in. loose tintype portrait featuring an African American nanny or maid surrounded by 5 white children, likely her charges.

The woman wears a mob cap characteristic of a 19th-century domestic worker, and holds one of the small children on her lap. The group poses before a backdrop painted to mimic the outdoors.

[With:] 15 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. chalk portrait on board depicting an African American woman seated in an outdoor setting, with manuscript notation on verso identifying the subject as "Mrs. Ella Davis from Rock Hill, SC."

Tintype: some bending/creasing to plate, typical surface wear and a minor rusting to edges, corners clipped.Chalk portrait: board curves upward, some wear to edges, few small punctures including one near top right portion of board and one near bottom right portion.
